Program Description

The B.A. (Hons.) in Social Sciences is a four-year multidisciplinary undergraduate programme designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of society, human behaviour, institutions, culture, economy, governance and contemporary social issues. The programme enables students to study social sciences through an interdisciplinary and flexible approach, with opportunities to develop disciplinary expertise through major and minor areas of study.

The programme integrates theoretical knowledge with practical learning through fieldwork, internships, projects, case studies, community engagement and research-based activities. Students are encouraged to critically examine issues such as social justice, gender, inequality, democracy, development, sustainability, culture and social change. Such integration of theory with field-based learning is also reflected in contemporary Social Sciences programme frameworks.

The four-year structure provides students with opportunities for advanced disciplinary learning, research, interdisciplinary exploration and career preparation, while developing communication, digital, analytical, problem-solving and employability skills. It is aligned with the multidisciplinary and student-centric approach envisaged under NEP 2020 and the UGC Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes. However, the exit policy is after three years (6 semesters), with a bachelor's degree is also applicable.

Programme Outcomes (POs)

PO1 – Disciplinary Knowledge:
Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and conceptual understanding of major areas of Social Sciences and their interrelationships.

PO2 – Interdisciplinary Understanding:
Integrate perspectives from disciplines such as Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Geography, Philosophy and related fields to understand complex social phenomena.

PO3 – Critical Thinking:
Critically analyse social, economic, political and cultural issues and evaluate ideas, arguments and evidence from multiple perspectives.

PO4 – Research Skills:
Apply appropriate qualitative and quantitative research methods for identifying, investigating and analysing social issues and problems.

PO5 – Data and Digital Literacy:
Use digital tools, information resources and basic statistical/data-analysis techniques for academic learning, research and decision-making.

PO6 – Communication Skills:
Demonstrate effective written, oral and digital communication skills for academic, professional and social contexts.

PO7 – Problem-Solving and Decision-Making:
Identify social and real-life problems, analyse their causes and consequences, and develop informed and practical solutions.

PO8 – Social Awareness and Sensitivity:
Develop sensitivity towards issues of social justice, equality, diversity, gender, inclusion, human rights and sustainable development.

PO9 – Ethical and Responsible Citizenship:
Demonstrate ethical values, social responsibility, constitutional values and commitment towards responsible citizenship and community well-being.

PO10 – Employability and Professional Skills:
Apply transferable skills such as teamwork, leadership, time management, adaptability, professional etiquette and problem-solving in diverse professional environments.

PO11 – Research and Innovation:
